Youngstown — Youngstown State’s men’s tennis team won in doubles and triumphed in four singles matches to beat Mercyhurst 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Tennis Center.
The Penguins improved to 7-2 in the dual season with their victory over the Lakers.
Youngstown State won all three doubles matches, and it had 6-1 edges at No. 1 and No. 3. Onder Balci and Ethan Dasset won in the top slot, and Alex Wooten and William Rassat combined to win at No. 3. Filip Avdeev and Mihai Haita made it a sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Youngstown State won at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to take four of the six points. Matches 1-5 were each decided in straight sets.
Balci beat Mercyhurst’s Danylo Rekun 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1, and Avdeev won 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3. over Colm Schultz. Dassett cruised to a 6-0, 6-2, win at No. 4 over Sviatoslav Koliadynski, and Haita won 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 over Derek Winsnes.
The Lakers’ points came at No. 2 and No. 6 singles as Rasset lost in straight sets and Takamasa Mishiro lost 2-1.
Youngstown State will be back in action with three matches in three days in North Carolina on March 5-7. The stretch will begin with a dual at Queens on March 5 at 1 p.m.
