The Atlantic Coast Conference has been overtaken as the best college basketball conference in the country.
Fortunately for the conference, No. 5 Duke (22-3, 14-1 ACC) is a contender for a national championship this season among a cluster of SEC teams. The Blue Devils bounced back from a Feb. 8 loss to Clemson with dominant wins over Cal and Stanford at home last week.
Following No. 1 Alabama’s loss to No. 2 Auburn in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Saturday, Duke will likely jump back into the top three in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll this week. The Blue Devils earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA top-16 seed reveal on Saturday, putting them in a good spot for a postseason run.
The Tigers picked up a resume-building win over the Blue Devils and followed it up with blowout wins over UNC and Florida State this past week to keep themselves in contention for the ACC title behind Duke. Louisville (19-6, 12-2) is also lurking with a chance to finish the season ranked.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has the Blue Devils, Tigers and Cardinals as the three teams firmly in the tournament in his most recent bracket projection, released on Friday. Lunardi has Clemson and Louisville both as No. 7 seeds. SMU, Wake Forest and North Carolina are the “first four out.”
