WHEELING – The Linsly Cadets earned a North Region title against the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights in a 12-5 victory, a win that was a long time coming for the Cadets.
“Hats off to [Central head coach] Kevin Malone, a superstar coach and an incredible human being,” Linsly coach Tucker Wilkinson said after the game. “They’ve run us for 11 years, 11 years straight they’ve beaten us. This is our first time beating them in that long. We had a really exciting game against Wheeling Park earlier in the year, it’s a pretty good feeling.”
Carter Remp, Asher Higham and Ethan Carlisle each had hat tricks for Linsly, while Remp and Nolan Smith each had two assists.
Severino Smathers, Darrian Bertram and Simon Schiebel also had goals for Linsly.
Will Riesbeck finished with eight saves from inside the goal.
“Will Reasbeck is a brick wall, and he’s only a freshman,” Wilkinson said. “The sky’s the limit, he’s a phenomenal young man and he’s a heck of a leader.”
For Central, Joey Hall led the team with three goals, while Brady Kerr and Owen Mullin each scored as well.
“A lot of the sport comes down to heart, energy, passion,” Central coach Kevin Maloney said. “And hats off to Linsly, they brought it, everybody was dialed in, a common goal-type mentality. We’ve just had some struggles this year, and it was difficult to get the guys rowing in the same direction.
“Linsly came ready to go. They’ve got a heck of a coach, heck of a staff, heck of a program. I wish them nothing but the best, they went out and they took this game.”
Linsly’s next opponent is yet to be set in stone with the standing still being cemented, though the Cadets are expecting to play Park once again after beating them 11-10 on April 18.
“Honestly this is the best group of young men I’ve ever been around, hands-down,” Wilkinson said. “They keep one another accountable. Things weren’t going right at the beginning of the game, they stayed positive, they played for one another. It makes my job really easy, because they’ve got it. We’ve got leaders, they work with each other and they’re able to execute and they got the game in-hand.”
