NEW DELHI: In 2024, the Indian cricket team’s schedule was notably light on One Day Internationals (ODIs), with only a single series played against Sri Lanka in August and that too India lost 0-2.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was scheduled from June 4 to 30, 2024, in the West Indies and the USA. In preparation, India’s schedule prioritized T20 Internationals (T20Is) to fine-tune the squad for the tournament.

Following the T20 World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) strategically planned a transition back to Test cricket. This shift aimed to maintain the team’s competitiveness in the longer format, leading to a packed Test schedule in the latter half of the year.
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) occupying the March to May window, followed by the T20 World Cup, player workload management became crucial. Limiting the number of ODIs helped prevent player burnout and reduced the risk of injuries during a year filled with high-intensity tournaments.
The BCCI’s scheduling decisions were influenced by the immediate need to prepare for the T20 World Cup and the subsequent focus on Test series against teams like Australia. This approach resulted in a reduced emphasis on ODIs for the year.
The combination of prioritizing the T20 World Cup, transitioning focus to Test cricket, managing player workloads, and strategic scheduling led to India playing only one ODI series in 2024.
