Hurricane Beryl, a powerful Category 4 storm, is heading toward Jamaica. Earlier, it crossed islands in the southeast Caribbean, killing at least six people. It roared through open waters on Tuesday.

1) For Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac, a hurricane warning was in effect.
2) According to the National Hurricane Centre, Beryl was losing intensity. However, it was predicted to be near major hurricane strength still when it passes near or over Jamaica early on Wednesday, near the Cayman Islands on Thursday, and into the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico on Friday.
3) Beryl, on Monday, became the earliest storm to develop into a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic. It touched a wind speed of 165 mph (270 kph) on Tuesday.
4) The storm was about 480 kilometres east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, on Tuesday night.
5) In a public address on Tuesday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, “I am encouraging all Jamaicans to take the hurricane as a serious threat,” However, people should not panic, he added.
6) In Miami, National Hurricane Centre Director Michael Brennan said Jamaica seems to be in the direct path of Beryl.
7) As the hurricane passed through the Caribbean Sea, rescue teams in southeastern islands spread out to determine the extent of the damage Beryl inflicted on Carriacou, an island in Grenada.
8) Three individuals were killed in Grenada and Carriacou and another in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, officials said.
9) Two other deaths were reported in northern Venezuela, where five people are missing, officials said.
10) Nearly 25,000 people in that region were also impacted by heavy downpour from Beryl.
