There doesn’t look to be too much pace on in the opener and that could favour AUTHENTIC LEGACY who has found just one too good on both his hurdling runs thus far and looks to have been found an excellent opportunity to go one better now, assuming connections stick with the more prominent tactics that were adopted last time out.
Gooloogong rates much the biggest threat on the back of his recent C&D third, with the promise of further improvement to come, with Jubilant another to consider if building on his Fakenham third (sent off 5/6 favourite) on his hurdling debut. He’s from the family of Editeur du Gite and should prove capable of much better form in due course.
Though his yard may not be quite firing on all cylinders yet, JOE COTTON was a tad unfortunate to bump into such a progressive one at Stratford on his return and can go one better. He was ridden more patiently than usual there but is adaptable in regards to tactics and Lorcan Williams should be alive to things should this race turn tactical.
The hat-trick-seeking West Orchard has looked a reformed character since switching to better ground and is the obvious threat despite a further 8 lb rise in the weights. C&D winner Lightonthewing fell early on when last seen but is respected, along with Mister Upton who has already bettered his hurdling form over fences.
HECOULDBETHEONE – who has the Timeform ‘Horses For Courses’ flag – is taken to resume his progression for the in-form James Owen yard now back from a break at a venue which suits his style of racing. Owen has a 24% strike rate with his hurdlers at up to 2m2f and the Timeform pace prediction for this race is ‘weak’ which should suit his front-runner if he can see off Goodwin (held up last time but normally a prominent racer) and Calshot Spit.
Chris Gordon has got back among the winners in the last couple of weeks and Goodwin might leave a disappointing chase reappearance behind and provide the chief threat ahead of Nicky Henderson four-year-old Kado de Joie.
Course winner GLIMPSE OF GALA has shown enough in her two starts over fences a year apart to suggest she can be very competitive off her current mark, especially now upped in trip. Charlie Longsdon’s mare acts on any ground and looks dangerously well-treated compared to the pick of her hurdling form.
Wetherby third Roll With It and the consistent Hauraki Gulf, who should be fit from hurdling, head the dangers, along with Whydah Gally who represents an in-form yard and who should take a step forward from his reappearance at Plumpton earlier this month.
A winner on the second of his two hurdle outings in France, QUANTOCK HILLS made a solid start for new connections when second in a juvenile hurdle at Wetherby 32 days ago and a repeat here could well be enough to see him go one place better. His new yard has its horses in good form and there’s a strong chance that he could get his own way in the lead if connections decide to be positive with him once more.
Small Fry has progressed well on the level this year and he, along with Newcastle runner-up Fine Point, heads up the dangers; it’s worth noting that his yard won the 2019 and 2020 renewals of this race.
Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ ASK HER OUT is given a chance to build on her promising second at Hereford five weeks ago. That was easily the pick of her form over timber and she looks to have been found a very winnable race in which to break her duck for Richenda Ford (did win on debut for Richard Rowe).
Handicap newcomers Sweet Caryline and Barra Blue can give her most to think about. The former made a bad mistake two out having travelled as well as any when beaten on her reappearance, and should come on for the run regardless, while the last-named represents a yard in great form and could be well-treated now tackling handicaps for the first time.
From his falling mark, MERSEY STREET produced his best effort since switched to handicaps when runner-up to an improver at Fakenham last month, so with that run behind him he could be ready to get off the mark.
Kielan Woods looks a notable jockey booking and this handicap perch of 84 looks one that he can win off. Whynotnowroy was suited by the longer trip when winning at this C&D in May and is feared most on stable debut for Neil Mulholland, ahead of the unexposed handicap debutant Getoverthathill.
