JUDGEMENTOFSOLOMON failed to meet expectations when a well-beaten third at Southwell last time, but a steadily-run race on the all-weather wouldn’t have suited such a strong stayer.
The testing ground here should place the emphasis on stamina which will be in the favour of Judgementofsolomon who is still relatively lightly raced at around two miles and could still have a bit more to offer.
This looks like an ordinary novice, and it represents a good opportunity for Qetaifan to defy a penalty. Last time, QETAIFAN stepped up on his first two starts to register a decisive victory on testing ground at Chester, clocking a good time figure in the process. That performance sets the standard, and he stands out as the one to beat.
CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD is on a long losing run that comprises 21 starts and stretches back to October 2021, but he’s on a handy mark and looks worth siding with. Chairmanoftheboard was beaten only a head off a 3lb higher mark at Newbury in April, and he also ran well when not beaten far in third at Newmarket in May.
He wasn’t at his best when down the field at Haydock a couple of weeks ago, but that was his first start in more than four months, and he tends to need the run, so he is entitled to be fitter here.
MAYDAY MALONE was beaten a length and a quarter by the reopposing Tactical Plan when runner-up at Chester last month but he meets that rival on 4lb better terms and may be capable of reversing the form if continuing his theme of run-by-run improvement.
Mayday Malone is a half-brother to Deepone, who won the Beresford Stakes on soft ground, and Mayday Malone showed he also handles testing conditions when keeping on well at Chester. He has more to offer and will have the assistance of Oisin Murphy in the saddle on his handicap debut.
CASTLE GATES shaped as if in need of the run when fifth on debut at Kempton, and he duly took a step forward to finish runner-up at Bath a couple of weeks ago, finding only a promising rival too strong and pulling clear of the remainder. That effort sets a good standard and, with the further step up in trip expected to suit, he holds strong claims.
PLANTADREAM hasn’t won since September 2020 but he has been knocking on the door this season and has finished runner-up on his last three starts, going close on each occasion.
He was beaten only a short head over this course and distance last week after conceding first run, and he remains fairly treated after edging up another 3lb in the weights. Hollie Doyle takes over in the saddle and another bold bid looks on the cards.
RACINGBREAKS RYDER is still searching for a first win of the season, but he’s shaped well on a few occasions and ran respectably when he was fourth at Thirsk last month. The Charlie Hills stable has been struggling for winners, but there have been some better signs of late, and Racingbreaks Ryder looks worth chancing from a fair mark.
