Laudable must have every chance of returning to winning form if he proves as effective on the AW as he is on turf, but there may still be more to come from the 3yo SOMETHING who finished runner-up in a stronger contest over C&D 11 days ago. Jamih wasn’t far behind him then and should go well again, while a good effort from Val Bassett wouldn’t surprise having not been with this yard for very long.
Celtic Warrior has done well in his few goes on the AW and represents a stable with a good record here, while Up The Jazz would need consideration if reproducing last week’s Ayr performance. The unexposed Lordsbridge Blu and No Surrender are also worth a second look, but the vote goes to LISEO who has dropped 4lb below his last winning mark and ran well in his only visit here.
Several of these are open to improvement making their nursery and/or AW debuts and the market may be useful in that regard. Dolly’s Delight is one such example as the market had suggested better was expected from her at Carlisle last month. Of those with more experience Clipsham Noble is worth a second look if enjoying a clearer run than last time, but preference is for HAWAII FIVE O who appeared to find 1m stretching him when attempting to make all on his nursery debut at Yarmouth. His trainer has a good record here.
All three newcomers are of strong interest and the betting should be informative as regards their respective chances. However, the penalised Qaseem has some good form in the book and ROYAL ALLIANCE has been gelded since running a nice first race behind last weekend’s Dewhurst third.
Ballyare is on such a lowly mark that he can’t be ignored, especially with Paul Mulrennan booked, but this may rest between Muddy Lynn, Noble Captain (second choice) and the in-form MISSMIMI. Marginal preference is for the latter, who has turned in a string of good runs here in recent weeks.
Shaladar and The Cookstown Cafu can give a good account for the older generation but this may be best left to the 3yos. Walson’s Law (second choice) fared better here on his recent handicap debut and now gets cheekpieces but INVERSION looks a likely big improver now her attentions are turned to minor handicaps.
All of these come with risks. BULLET POINT will need to run better than on his handicap debut as there were no excuses, but he could strip fitter this time having been off for over two months. Parthenopaeus is a well-bred handicap newcomer with form here and he’s the most interesting alternative. A back-to-form Roaring Ralph could be dangerous.
Whatwouldyouknow makes the shortlist having dropped 5lb lower than when winning this race two years ago, while five-time C&D winner Pop Favorite has also become well treated. End Zone and Masterpainter are others to consider, but the choice is MR HEINZ (nap) whose record over C&D reads 12413.
It makes sense to focus on those in form and DRAKEHOLES appeared to have a bit up his sleeve when collecting here last time. Yaahobby is doing well in his new headgear and making a case for him as second choice brings Barossa and Concert Boy into the equation. Garifullina is another on top of her game right now.
