Few stories in the NBA are as dynamic and multi-faceted as that of Gilbert Arenas. Known as “Agent Zero” during his prime, Arenas’s career was marked by jaw-dropping performances, particularly with the Washington Wizards, where he solidified his legacy. But his story doesn’t end with his last NBA game. Post his career, he managed to stay in the limelight by pivoting to digital media, becoming a top YouTuber and podcast host. How did Arenas, once at the center of a major NBA controversy, turn things around and build a diverse portfolio that continues to grow his net worth?
His rise in the NBA was as impressive as it was lucrative, setting the foundation for his financial success both during and after his NBA days. Being the 31st pick in the 2001 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors, Arenas established that he was a bargain, and he immediately built a name for himself.

Gilbert Arenas started his NBA career with an inadequate $332,817 in his debut season. His breakout season came in 2002-2003 when he was voted the NBA’s Most Improved Player, which led to a five-year, $50 million contract with the Washington Wizards. By the 2005-2006 season, Arenas was placed fourth in the league, averaging 29.3 points per game, which in turn increased his reputation. As a result, in 2008, he signed a six-year, $111 million contract with the Wizards, raising his total NBA earnings to nearly $160 million. Sadly, this didn’t last long.
His career took a downward turn after the 2009 firearms incident, leading to a season-long ban that marked the beginning of the end of his NBA career. Fast forward to recent years, Arenas has made a persona in the digital world, with the start of his Gil’s Arena podcast and his growing presence on YouTube. His YouTube channel and show not only kept him occupied but also brought in major income.
The podcast, which includes discussions with past NBA players like Brandon Jennings and Kenyon Martin, has gained a substantial following, further adding to Arenas’s income, and most importantly, a loyal fan base. Although not much information is available about his YouTube earnings, one can imagine that the sponsorships associated with the gig are significant.
However, during his NBA career, Gilbert Arenas experienced a financial setback, that reduced his bank balance. His former aide, John White, who was entrusted with managing Arenas’s money, misused his trust. White took out an astounding $7 million from Arenas’s accounts over some time. This loss was not just a financial setback but also a devastating psychological betrayal for Arenas.
This led to a lawsuit, as Arenas sought to reclaim his lost funds and hold White accountable. It was a major wake-up call for Arenas, forcing him to reassess how he handled his funds and despite the setbacks, Arenas has continued to rebuild his financial portfolio.
While Arenas’s on-court profits were considerable, his off-court activities greatly expanded his wealth. His association with Adidas was one of the most notable sponsorships of his career. With the Adidas Gil Zero and Adidas TS Lightswitch, Arenas gained millions from these partnerships. The Adidas arrangement, which saw Arenas signing straight $100,000 deals in 2013 and 2014, was a major component of his financial portfolio. However, this association with Adidas ceased unexpectedly following the 2009 incident.

Another one of Gilbert Arenas’s endorsements was being featured by EA Sports on the cover of NBA Live 08. Being chosen as a cover athlete for such a major sports video game series is a rare honor, reserved for players who have not only demonstrated exceptional skill on the court but have also caught the interest of fans worldwide. While not much is known in terms of monetary value, the game’s broad success, especially among younger viewers, further elevated Arenas’s image.
Arenas additionally secured a major marketing deal with Sprite. The Beverage giant Coca-Cola Company has a rich history of working with NBA stars, such as Michael Jordan and many others, leveraging their fame to connect with a broad, youthful audience. Arenas’s connection with Sprite during his prime years saw him featured in various marketing campaigns, which played a significant role in boosting his image.
Gilbert Arenas’s transition from NBA star to digital media personality is a testament to his resilience and adaptability. Despite earning millions and securing major endorsements, Arenas faced significant challenges, including a $7 million embezzlement by his assistant. Yet, he managed to bounce back by strategically shifting his focus to digital media, where he continues to thrive.
