France’s highest court has upheld former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s conviction for corruption and other crimes.
French media outlets say Sarkozy will be forced to stay at home for one year and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. This is an unprecedented sentence for a former French head of state.
Sarkozy was accused of offering to secure a job for a judge in return for information about a probe into suspected illegal donations made to his 2007 presidential campaign.
He pleaded not guilty. A Paris court and an appeals court convicted him. He was sentenced to three years in prison, but the first two years of the sentence were suspended.
Sarkozy appealed to the Court of Cassation. The top court dismissed his appeal on Wednesday.
On the same day, Sarkozy maintained in a social media post that he is completely innocent.
The former president is expected to stand trial in a separate case. He is suspected of having accepted illegal campaign funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar al-Qadhafi.
