Everyone expects a massive leap out of generational talent Victor Wembanyama this season, but no one anticipates a bigger jump than a former Philadelphia 76ers guard.
Patrick Beverley ranked the NBA’s best centers on a recent episode of his podcast, where Wembanyama went unnamed. This is because the now-overseas star not only sees the San Antonio Spurs big man as positionless but also the league’s best player.
“He’s not a five,” Beverley shared. “He’s everything. You can’t even put him in comparison with other people, he’s the best player in the NBA next year. He’s a center who shoots threes and dribbles the ball.”
Wembanyama helped lead France to the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics after a stellar rookie campaign. As Beverley noted, it’s hard to pinpoint a weakness in his skillset. The only real concern going forward for the No. 1 pick is injuries. His tall, slim frame could lead to some health issues, but everything shows Wembanyama is taking the necessary precautions.
“Just because you’re 7’4″ doesn’t make you a center. We’re talking about guys who are centers, who come out and set screen and rolls. None of the guys that we are naming come up and shoot hesi-pull threes, maybe [Joel] Embiid a little bit but that’s it. It’s not fair for him to give him a position. He’s an alien, he’s positionless.”
