Welding has been revealed as the most sought-after skilled trade job in Derry, according to a new study. 

The study was conducted by flooring specialists Mr Sander, as they analysed Google search data from each UK area to determine the skilled trade jobs with the highest interest.

Welder finished at the at the top of the list with an average monthly search volume of 87.50, making it the most sought-after skilled trade job, with welding jobs paying an average of around £18.12 per hour.

Second and third on the list were plumbers and electricians, respectively.

There was an average monthly search volume of 70.83 for plumbers and 68.33 for electricians, with the average salary for plumbers being £16.49 per hour and the average hourly wage for electricians being £17.51.

Painting and decorating was fourth on the list with an average monthly search volume of 59.17. This trade earns an average salary of £14.03 per hour, making it one of the lower-paid trade jobs.

Coming in at the at the bottom of the list in fifth was bricklayer, with this trade having an average monthly search volume of 58.33. A bricklayer, on average, will earn an annual salary of £31,851, although this is dependent on several factors.

Data was found for searches with keywords such as ‘(job) jobs’, ‘(job) jobs near me’, ‘how to become a (job)’, ‘how much does a (job) make’ and ‘(job) salary’.

Anthony Miller, CEO of Mr Sander, commented on the findings. 

He said: “These trends in job searches show a continued interest in skilled trade jobs, highlighting their importance in addressing everyday needs.

“Skilled trade jobs like those in the study are in high demand, and the best way to begin a career in these roles is usually through education and hands-on training. For many, this involves enrolling in job-related training programs or obtaining certificates that provide essential skills.

“Apprenticeships are also a good method for gaining practical experience while earning money. They provide on-the-job training under the guidance of qualified professionals, which is valuable when learning the necessary skills.

“These approaches not only prepare individuals for successful careers in these jobs but also ensure that they are well-equipped to take advantage of the high earning potential and opportunities for progression.”
