NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA — Golfers looking for top-tier courses in the Philadelphia region don’t need to travel far to find prime links.
According to Golf Magazine, one of the nation’s best golf courses is right here in Newtown Square.
The publication recently listed the best courses in the country, among them is Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square.
Golf Magazine listed Aronimink Golf Club at No. 84 on its list.
Designed by Scottish professional golfer and course designer Donald Ross, Aronimink opened in 1928 and still features Ross’s designs.
“Donald Ross always thought Aronimink would be his masterpiece,” Golf Magazine wrote. “Over the years, a who’s who of great architects gently tweaked this suburban Philly classic, and while the course never lost its greatness, bits of Ross’s genius were slowly chipped away. Almost 20 years of patient restoration — most recently led by Gil Hanse — have brought Ross’s original vision back to life. Today, the famous Tudor clubhouse overlooks a course with larger greens and more treacherous bunkers that is once again the ‘supreme test’ Ross intended.”
Last year, the private club was ranked No. 81 in the nation by Golf.
Located at 3600 St Davids Road in Newtown Square, Aronimink has hosted numerous professional and amateur golf championships, including the 1962 PGA Championship, the 2023 Senior PGA Championship, and the 2020 Women’s PGA Championship.
Aronimink is scheduled to host the 2026 PGA Championship.
Other courses in Pennsylvania to make the list include Oakmont (No. 5), Merion East (No. 8), and Fox Chapel (No. 82).
