Defense wins championships.
That old adage seems to be ringing true for Monroe County Region basketball this season.
The three winningest girls teams in the Region also rank 1-2-3 for defense.
Gibraltar Carlson (14-4) is giving up 32.7 points per game, Bedford (16-1) yields just 32.9 per night and St. Mary Catholic Central (18-0) limits opponents to 35.6 a game.
It’s the same way for the boys, where the top two teams also are the two best defensive squads.
SMCC (16-4) is statistically the Region’s best defense squad with a 46.4 points-against average. Summerfield (18-1) is stingy, too, with a 47.4 average.
Airport (54.7) and New Boston Huron (54.1) lead the girls teams in points per game.
The best offenses for the boys are Summerfield (71.4), SMCC (63.2) and Bedford (62.5).
As regular season winds down, the individual scoring race for girls is led by Victoria Gray of Bedford at 20.1 points per game with Ida’s Jessica Schrader second at 19.1.
Jefferson’s Trey Oldenburg has opened up a big lead for the boys with 21.6 points per game. Graham Junge of Flat Rock ranks second at 18.9, Ian Foster of SMCC third at 17.8, Tyler Dafoe of Summerfield fourth at 17.7 and Jace Williams of Bedford fifth at 17.0.
