COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A federal judge this week sentenced a convicted felon to 10 years in prison for gun and drug charges.
Davon L. Rayford, 28, of Columbus, was already on supervision for a robbery conviction when he fired a gun in the parking lot full of customers at a Top Golf location at Polaris in February 2023, prosecutors said.
Around 4:30 p.m., he left the building and went to his car after getting into an altercation with people he was golfing with. The Department of Justice said he retrieved a Glock 9mm pistol and fired several shots, then drove off.
A special duty police officer was present, and video captured the incident.
The next day, an intoxicated Rayford was in a car crash. Prosecutors said he tried to get away from officers, who recovered 42.53 grams of methamphetamine, 7.95 grams of cocaine, 5.42 grams of fentanyl, 79 Xanax tablets, and 55 tablets that tested positive for fentanyl, and $5,000.
They also found the handgun that investigators said was a ballistics match to one used at Top Golf.
“The community is not safe with Rayford in it,” a prosecutor wrote.
Rayford was charged federally and arrested in June 2023. He pleaded guilty in May 2024.
The federal judge ordered him to serve his federal sentence consecutive to his current state incarceration, which is due to end in August 2026.
