Cogburn joined the top 10 of the latest National Thoroughbred Racing Association poll of the top Thoroughbreds in the U.S. after his win in the Grade 2 Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs on Saturday.
The 5-year-old son of Not This Time moved to no. 5 in the rankings from no. 13 the previous week. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Cogburn is 3-for-3 this season, all in graded stakes.
Also moving up in the rankings was Next, who climbed to no. 10 from no. 12 despite not having a start since Aug. 4. The 6-year-old gelding trained by William Cowans is on a six-race win streak.
The top four spots remained unchanged, with Fierceness in no. 1 followed by Thorpedo Anna, Adare Manor and National Treasure.
The NTRA top Thoroughbred poll represents horses competing for horse of the year. This week’s poll and covers racing performances through Sept. 8. Voting is conducted by national media. The poll concludes on Nov. 5, afterthe Breeders’ Cup.
