We are just about 4 months away until BYU basketball begins the regular season in the highly anticipated first season of Kevin Young. BYU still has one open scholarship that they may or may not fill, but the roster is essentially set as BYU is in the middle of summer workouts and practices.
Media pundits have released way-too-early top 25 rankings since the end of the season in April, but one notable analytics guru updated his preseason rankings. Bart Torvik released updated his preseason projections and BYU checks in at number 28. The rankings formula follows many of the same principles as KenPom, with offensive and defensive efficiency at the core of determining rankings. Torvik has BYU at 22 in offensive efficiency and 41 in defensive efficiency. BYU finished last season at 24 in Torvik’s rankings.
