RENVILLE — Ryan Schrupp leads a group of three returning starters for the Renville County West boys basketball team, which is banking on those players in hopes of an improved season.
Schrupp was an All-Area Third Team member who led the Jaguars to a 7-19 record. RCW finished with a 5-11 record in the Camden Conference.
Jaguars head coach Matt Huhnerkoch, who enters his 14th season at the helm of the Jaguars, has high expectations for Schrupp, a 6-foot-2 guard.
Schrupp averaged 23.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a junior. He has 1,184 career points.
“There is no question that the leader of the team is Ryan,” Huhnerkoch said. “Ryan needs to find a way to take his great high school career to another level for this team to take the next step.”
Also back as starters are Joe Valdovinos and Jon Driggs, both of whom Huhnerkoch expects to take on larger roles.
Valdovinos, who averaged 9.0 points per game as a junior, is a 5-11 guard. Driggs is a 6-4 sophomore forward who averaged 8.5 points per game as a freshman.
2024-25 schedule
“It is equally important that key contributors from last season, Joe Valdovinos and Jon Driggs, expand their games to make this team even better,” said Huhnerkoch, who is assisted by Richard Schrupp and Brady Holwerda.
Denoted as players to watch by Huhnerkoch are Braylon Hinderks and Brayden Klaassen.
Hinderks is a 6-4 senior who averaged 3.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Klaassen is a 5-9 sophomore who is “an up-and-coming talent.”
“This season the Jags look to improve on their record as many of the key players from last season return,” Huhnerkoch said. “We will look for one or two of the younger players to step in and contribute to take this team to the next level.”
