MORGAN — Consider the Trojans state-bound.
Top-seed Morgan bested No. 16 North Sanpete 72-31 in the second round of the 3A boys basketball state tournament on Saturday, punching its ticket to the quarterfinals with No. 9 Emery on Monday at the UCCU Center in Orem.
Up 12 by the end of the first quarter, the Trojans (23-1) finished with four double-digit scorers: Bracken Saunders (15 points), Nate Pace (14 points), Jake Hansen (13 points), and Brody Peterson (13 points). Kolton Asay added eight points and Ben Russell chipped in five.
Morgan entered the postseason earning a first-round bye with its perfect 10-0 finish in Region 13. The Trojans’ quarterfinal with the nine-seed Spartans (12-12) is set for 9:30 a.m.
NEPHI — A slow start snowballed for No. 12 Ogden falling at No. 5 Juab 71-59 in the second round of the 3A tourney on Saturday.
The Tigers, ending the season 11-13, found themselves down big 23-7 at the end of the first quarter. Ogden outscored the Wasps 38-35 in the second half but never found the run it needed.
Jackson Maw led Ogden with 21 points. Brayden Wilson added nine points and Ryan Kirkland finished with eight.
OREM — Second-seed Canyon View’s 49 first-half points outweighed No. 15 challenger Ben Lomond 85-34 in the second round of the 3A tourney on Saturday.
Korver Van Beekum’s 11 points led the Scots, ending their campaign 6-19. Jaerdan Van Beekum and Deshawn Holland added six points apiece.
NORTH LOGAN — Down 15 by halftime, No. 16 West Field couldn’t break top-seed Green Canyon 60-42 in the second round of the 4A tourney on Saturday.
Cole McCormick led the Longhorns, finishing their inaugural season 11-14, with nine points all from 3-point range. Drew Faddis and Jaxon Slaugh each added seven to the scoring. Jaden Fowers and Jordan Harrison each chipped in six.
