As the calendar turns to February, it’s time for the boys high school basketball teams to gear up for the postseason, and this year, there could be as much chaos as ever.
With less than two weeks and just a handful of games remaining until the playoffs begin, the race to claim the top spots in the district standings is wide open, and the sprint to the finish line will be must-see-TV.
The Panthers are 15-4 overall and a perfect 10-0 in district play after edging Forest Park 49-42 on Friday to retain first in the standings. The Bruins are 15-6 overall and 8-2 in district play, with their only district losses coming to the Panthers. Potomac also defeated Forest Park 68-66 in triple overtime on Jan. 22.
The battle for third in the Cardinal District is equally as tight, with the Woodbridge Vikings holding the slight advantage over the Gar-Field Red Wolves at 11-7 overall and 7-4 in the district. The Vikings took third with a recent 79-69 win over the Red Wolves, who are 13-8 overall and 5-5 in the district and on track for their first winning season in six years.
In the western half of the county, the Cedar Run District appears to be a two-team race as well with the Patriot Pioneers and the Gainesville Cardinals leading the pack.
The Pioneers, the back-to-back state runner-up, are 16-4 overall and 10-0 in the district and seem as dominant as usual, but the upstart Cardinals are hot on their trail at 15-5 and 8-3.
Next in line are the Freedom (South Riding) Eagles and the Battlefield Bobcats. The Eagles downed the Bobcats 52-50 on Friday to improve to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in the district, while Battlefield dropped to 10-10 and 6-4.
The district tournaments begin Feb. 12, and with several meaningful games remaining in the regular season, the seedings are still far from set in stone.
