CLEVELAND, Ohio — The 2025 NFL Draft is now officially the focus for football fans with the conclusion of Super Bowl 59 — but lurking just before the draft is free agency.
The new league year officially begins on March 12 at 4 p.m. ET when free agency officially begins and 2024 contracts expire.
The negotiating period, however, begins two days before on March 10. That’s when clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with agents of the players who will become unrestricted free agents.
So who are some of the top players currently on the Browns who will be in that group?
Each year, Pro Football Focus ranks the top 100 upcoming free agents. This year, three Cleveland Browns made the cut:

Rank: No. 70.
What PFF said: “Wills had a very unceremonious end to his Cleveland Browns tenure, battling nagging injuries for the second year in a row that caused him to miss more than half the season. He was also effectively benched to close out another ugly individual season despite the Browns’ struggles at the tackle spots all year long.
“Nonetheless, a top-10 pick pedigree at offensive tackle always goes a long way in free agency.”
Analysis: It’s interesting that Wills is the top Browns player on that list, but perhaps that will speak to a higher market value than Cleveland fans are anticipating because of his pedigree as a former top-10 pick.
Knee injuries derailed his last two years in Cleveland, and if he is back, it would likely be on a cheaper contract in more of a swing tackle role. The coaching staff and front office seems impressed enough with what Dawand Jones did in three starts at left tackle this year to give him another shot.
Did Jameis Winston revive his career with the Browns? Joshua Gunter, cleveland.com
Rank: No. 85.
What PFF said: “Winston injected some life into the league’s worst offense, previously led by one of the league’s worst quarterbacks, in a backup role for the Browns, leading to a breakout season for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who was acquired in the offseason from the Denver Broncos and extended to a deal that now looks like a major bargain.
“This alone was a welcome development and important to learn going forward, as Cleveland traded away Amari Cooper at the deadline. As for Winston, he is who we thought he was: a true gunslinger who is just as likely to keep his team in a game as take them out of it.”
Analysis: This spot makes sense for Winston.
His gunslinger tendencies will bring out the best and worst of his game, but don’t be surprised if he gets an opportunity to start somewhere else next year considering how he did breathe some life into a Browns offense that was D.O.A.
At the very least, Winston reintegrated himself into the national spotlight due to his personality and leadership ability in a difficult time for Cleveland. Those attributes alone will have teams who need a backup QB calling.
Nick Chubb’s future in Cleveland hangs in the balance after two years of injuries. John Kuntz, cleveland.com
Rank: No. 90.
What PFF said: “The fact that Chubb suited up at all in 2024 after an ugly knee injury sustained in 2023 against the Pittsburgh Steelers speaks to his remarkable resilience, making a similar recovery from a nasty college knee injury to have one of the most efficient starts to a career for any running back to ever play the game.
“Chubb was not his usual elusive and bruising self in 2024, ceding some work to Jerome Ford after being given a fairly large role upon his return, but it’s entirely possible he just needs another full offseason to get his body right for an NFL game workload.”
Analysis: What the Browns do about Chubb is going to be maybe the most underrated decision they make this offseason.
Due to injuries over the last two seasons, the price may be right for Cleveland to bring him back on a largely incentive-based deal. If that happens, it wouldn’t be surprising for the Browns to draft a rookie and make that player the featured back, with Chubb still having a key role.
With bringing him back, there’s also the intangibles: He’s one of the key leaders and faces of the franchise.
