Top of the list is THE CRAFTYMASTER, who has a record of 7-18 on AW and is well treated off the same mark as for his close call at Lingfield 11 days ago. The main danger is Alright Sunshine, who was only just caught at Southwell last week and is a big player if he can repeat that form back up in trip.
Starshot holds Battle Point, Suanni, and Bobby On The Beat on a Lingfield run last month, but he’s 0-27 and may have to make do with more minor money. Perhaps WAR ZONE, who is hardly prolific himself but whose win came over C&D, can benefit from the return to 5f. His yard is going along nicely this year.
Twilight Fun and Secret Mistral are both high on the list, but DIOMED SPIRIT (NAP) drops back into a 0-80 from a better draw than he has had the last two, and he looks to hold excellent claims. His third at Wolverhampton in December suggested he was as good as ever and he’s now back down to his last winning mark.
McIntosh is an interesting newcomer, while Star Zia and Massimo Blue (second choice) have shown enough to think they could win a similar event. NOBLE VICTORY shaped nicely at Southwell on his debut though and today’s extra yardage can see him go one better.
Rebel Path has to be considered on his first C&D run since fending off some useful sprinters in December while Monsieur Beaulieu has plenty going for him on his Lingfield form before failing to come up with the goods there last time. REBEL EMPIRE stood up well to a busy spell in midwinter though and he may yet find a bit more back from a short break. Ultramarine and Lessay is also interesting.
Maid Of Killybegs looks a likely player after her Wolverhampton effort last time, but NO RELEASE is preferred as his style of racing suggests this marked drop in trip may prove fruitful. Camden Flyer and Ancient State are other possible players.
Most of these have quite a lot to prove but MISSILE MAC did well to finish third behind a progressive rival on Tapeta last time and is a big player if she can back that up. The main threat could come from Rumba Bay, who wasn’t far behind the selection at Wolverhampton last month, and that was an encouraging start for her new yard.
A great deal probably hinges on whether the newcomer MAGICAL TREASURE or form pick Pearl Of Hope is Charlie Appleby’s first string and, given her pedigree and 575,000gns purchase price, the chance is taken that it is the former. Given their powerful stables, fellow debutantes Likealot and Praying For Time need plenty of respect. The betting moves will have to be consulted.
Most of these have realistic each-way claims but SOLANNA is narrowly the most persuasive for win purposes judged on his last two races, which produced a win and a close second. Switchel and Cloud Free are next on the list.
