The high school basketball season is underway and two Strathcona County teams are off to an impressive start in the Metro Edmonton High School Athletics league.

Salisbury Composite High School’s senior girls basketball team are currently holding top spot in Division 1, having won all five of the games played so far. Finishing undefeated at the Archbishop Jordan Senior Slam in December, they wrapped up the calendar year with a gold medal at the tournament. Starting 2025 off with a bang and some more hardware, the girls continued their success at the Jim Lazaruk Invitational hosted at Sal in January where they also won gold.
Facing off against Paul Kane on Monday, Feb. 3 at home, the Sabres defeated the Blues 69-46.
“We’re senior heavy, we have seven seniors on the team and they’re just really working hard together and playing well,” said Sal senior girls basketball coach Ron Davies. “We’re really lucky, we have some guards who are dominant and we have some posts who are doing really well. We have one post in Grade 12 and two in Grade 11 who are really dominating right now, so it’s a complete team.”

Ranked ninth in the province, the Sabres senior girls have just five league games left in the season and are approaching each one with the same intensity they will take into playoffs.
“Every league game is a playoff game, that’s how important every league game is,” Davies said. “If we continue to play well, we can upset some (teams) this year, so we’re excited about those opportunities.”
The Sabres girls will next travel to Ross Shepherd on Wednesday, Feb. 12, and host Strathcona High School on Friday, Feb. 21. at 5:30 p.m.
In Division 3, Ardrossan Junior Senior High’s senior girls team is in second place with five wins and just one loss. Earning a spot at the Holy Rosary and Cochrane tournaments, the hard work of the senior girls also led to a championship on home court at the Bison Thunder invitational on Saturday, Feb. 1. Defeating Camrose Composite High School in what coach Brandin St. Peter described as a “hard-fought final four”.

The pay off for the girls’ hard work and impressive performance is an honourable mention in the 3A provincial rankings.
“A testament to their dedication and teamwork” said St. Peter.
The senior Bisons enter the second half of the season with their sight set on playoffs, working hard to prepare, the team is focused on finishing strong. With just two graduating players on the team, the future looks bright for the Ardrossan senior girls.
“It is truly a pleasure to work with this amazing group of girls every day,” the coach said. “Their commitment, work ethic, and love for the game make it a true joy to be in the gym with them. I couldn’t be prouder of their growth and accomplishments so far this season.”
