SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — University of Texas Men’s Basketball freshman Tre Johnson has been named one of the Top 10 midseason candidates for the 2025 Jerry West Award, the Naismith Hall of Fame announced Tuesday. Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor now in its 11th year recognizes the top shooting guard in Division I men’s college basketball.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in both of the remaining rounds starting on Friday, Feb. 7 at the following web site: www.hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In March, the Top 10 list will be narrowed to just five, and in late March, the five finalists will be presented to West’s family and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee, where winners will be selected. The Selection Committee for the Jerry West Award is composed of top men’s college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. The winners of the 2025 West Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the four other members of the Men’s and Women’s Starting Five.
Johnson leads the SEC in scoring (19.0 ppg) while converting 45.0-percent (134-298) from the field, including a 37.7-percent mark (49-130) from three-point range, and 88.6-percent (62-70) from the free throw line this season. He has reached double figures in 19 of his 20 games played, topped the 20-point mark seven times and eclipsed the 30-point mark once.
Johnson also leads the team in minutes (32.6 mpg) and ranks second in assists (46, 2.3 apg) and third in steals (19). His 19.0 ppg scoring average is the highest by a Texas player since J’Covan Brown averaged 20.1 ppg during the 2011-12 season. Johnson has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week three times this season (Nov. 11, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3).
Texas (15-7, 4-5 SEC) is back in action when it hosts Arkansas (13-8, 2-6 SEC) on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
