The Bruins (1-1) claimed the doubles point in thrilling fashion and added singles victories by Rudy Quan and Aadarsh Tripathi, but could not secure a fourth point. The Toreros (2-0) bounced back in singles play behind Adrien Berrut, Savriyan Danilov, Oliver Tarvet and the clinching Klaassen.
Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels got UCLA off on the right foot in doubles play, earning a break of serve for 5-3 and riding that to a 6-3 versus the 88th-ranked pair of Danilov and Iiro Vasa. There was just one break on the top court, as well, where No. 1 Klaassen/Tarvet bested the No. 10 team of Tripathi and Alexander Hoogmartens 6-4.
With all eyes on Court 3, the teams traded one break apiece en route to a tiebreaker. Quan and Kaylan Bigun seized the first four points there and rolled to a 7-2 victory opposite No. 72 Berrut/Blake Kasday. The dual-match doubles win was the first for each freshman.
USD countered by taking four singles first sets. The Bruins were able get the upper hand on Court 6 and Tripathi rode that to his second win victory in as many matches. The 6-3, 6-1 decision over Neo Niedner made the score 2-0. On the next court over, though, the Toreros chipped away at their deficit thanks to Berrut. He held off Hoogmartens in a 7-5, 6-4 result.
Bigun and van Loben Sels forced third sets to briefly shift momentum back in UCLA’s favor. Bigun was ultimately forced to retire due to injury, however, and No. 29 Danilov added a 6-3, 5-7 win to the scoreboard and briefly pulled USD level.
On Court 2, No. 50 Quan improved to 2-0 in dual-match singles play with his 6-3, 7-6(5) victory against Vasa that gave the Bruins a 3-2 advantage. The Toreros quickly answered on the top court, as No. 15 Tarvet kept No. 13 Johnson from forcing a third set. The 7-6(2), 6-4 decision turned all eyes toward Court 4.
Trailing 1-5 in the third set, No. 82 van Loben Sels took the next three games. No. 71 Klaassen would not let him get any closer, though, winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
UCLA next travels to Boston, Mass. for ITA Kickoff Weekend at Harvard’s Murr Center. The Bruins meet No. 14 Texas A&M at 11 a.m. PT Saturday. The day’s first match pits No. 14 Harvard against Georgia. The winners will face off Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. The consolation match will be played in the morning, at 7 a.m. PT.
