The stakes are getting higher for Chattanooga-area high school basketball teams. Here are five of the most important girls and boys games this week:
GIRLS
› Baylor (6-11) at Silverdale Baptist (12-9), Monday, 6: Lady Seahawks’ sophomore guard Kinsley Owen reached 1,000 career points in a 21-point district home win over Boyd Buchanan Friday. Owen had seven assists and steals as well, while Braylee Raby had a double-double. The Lady Red Raiders are coming off a close region road win over GPS in which Xahara Willis scored 20 points.
› Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (6-10, 6-4) at Sonoraville (17-2, 10-1), Tuesday, 6: The Lady Warriors were considered a non-factor in tough Region 7-AA after starting the season an uncharacteristic 1-9, but coach Dewayne Watkins’ team has won five of six behind point guard Christen Collins, including region wins over Ringgold and Union County. Sonoraville is the hottest team in Northwest Georgia with 12 consecutive wins, including handing Murray County its first loss last week to tie the Lady Indians for first place.
› Fannin County (13-2, 7-0) at Christian Heritage (15-3, 7-2), Wednesday, 6: Any hopes the Lady Lions have of challenging for the top seed in Region 7-A Division I hinge on winning this one in the Lions’ Den. This is the first meeting between the two teams after being snowed out and they play again to close out the regular season Feb. 7. Fannin, coming off a 25-point blowout of Chattooga, has been the class of the league so far.
› Chattanooga Christian (13-4) at GPS (4-9), Friday, 5:30: Momo Moore scored 40 points and hit a game-winning 3-pointer in front of 17 Division I college coaches on Saturday at “4 Tha Culture” against Campbell of Georgia, which came in 17-1. GPS will have its hands full going against one of the nation’s premier freshman point guards, who has already surpassed 1,000 career points.
› Rhea County (12-5, 1-0) vs. Cleveland (13-4, 1-0), Friday, 6: Cleveland is in search of a seventh straight win as Laney Copeland has been scorching hot of late with 17 3-pointers over her last four games. In her season debut against McMinn County, Lauren Hurst made all 10 of her field goal attempts for the Lady Blue Raiders as she finished with 22 points and three steals. The Lady Golden Eagles will look for a major road upset as junior Jenna Burchard is a big threat in the post.
BOYS
› Walker Valley (17-2) at Red Bank (15-4), Tuesday, 7:30: The Mustangs are one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the state and are one of the top teams in the Chattanooga area up to this point. Brothers Ashton and Zach Davis are one of the best guard tandems in the area. The Lions pride themselves on their aggressive defense. Jaylen Rice leads the way on both ends of the court as he averages over 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals per game.
› Baylor (8-7) at Chatt Prep (14-5), Friday, 7: Zane Restelli and Derrick Roberson will go head-to-head in a matchup of two of the area’s top talents. Restelli was lights out against McCallie with 23 points to go along with half a dozen rebounds and assists, while Roberson and the Sentinels will look to bounce back from a tough road loss to Class 2A powerhouse Tyner. Both teams have something to prove here.
› Bradley Central (11-7, 2-0) at East Hamilton (11-2, 2-0), Friday, 7:30: Senior Josiah Wiley has led a major resurgence for the Hurricanes, who only won seven games a season ago. Wiley excels in many areas as he averages over 13 points to go along with 4.5 steals and over a block per game. The Bears will have a major size advantage in this one as each team looks to take control of District 6-4A.
› Chattooga (15-3, 8-1) at Christian Heritage (13-1, 8-0), Friday, 7:30: The Lions won the teams’ earlier meeting by seven and can take firm control in Region 7-A Division I with a sweep Friday. The Indians, though, are coming in red hot with eight straight wins as Dan Meyer, who averages nearly 30 points per game, continues to sizzle. The Christian Heritage defense, however, is hard to crack.
› Northwest Whitfield (14-3, 6-1) at Adairsville (11-8, 6-1), Friday, 8:30: At least a share of first place is on the line in Region 7-AAA as the Bruins try to sweep both regular season games with the Tigers. Adairsville comes in with five straight wins, including handing Calhoun its lone league loss last week. The defensive-minded Bruins will have to keep Tre Winters from going off to win this one on the road.
