Are you aware of which jobs are currently in high demand in the UK? A great way to identify the top roles for the coming year is by analysing trends in job posting growth. AI roles appear on the list for the first time.
School teachers top the list, with solicitor and healthcare roles also in high demand in Indeed’s ranking of the 10 fastest-growing jobs over the last year.
The global hiring platform Indeed has unveiled the UK’s top jobs for 2025, based on key factors that matter most to job seekers: opportunity, demand, and salary. Top jobs included school teacher, property solicitor, and paediatrician. AI/Machine Learning Engineer secured the 10th spot, showing the increased demand for AI related roles.
Which professions saw the largest increase in job postings between 2023 and 2024? What are the average salaries for these high-demand jobs?
School teachers took the top position for the largest increase in job advertisements, with a striking 245% year-over-year rise in the share of jobs posted. This trend reflects the continuing “teacher recruitment and retention crisis” reported by the teachers’ unions.
The Teacher Labour Market in England Annual Report 2024, published in March 2024, revealed that teacher supply is in a critical state, posing a substantial risk to the quality of education.
The report noted a 44% increase in the number of teachers considering leaving the profession between 2021/22 and 2022/23. It urged the adoption of “ambitious, radical, and cost-effective policy options” to address these pressing challenges. The report found:
Teacher recruitment remains far below targeted levels and leaving rates are likely to increase
Overall secondary recruitment for 2023/24 reached half of its target
In 2024/25, 10 out of 17 secondary subjects are forecast to under-recruit
Solicitors have experienced a significant rise in demand, with property zolicitors achieving the 2nd spot due to a 111% increase in job postings. Employment solicitors followed closely, ranking 8th with a 93% growth in job share.
There is also strong demand for healthcare roles, with doctors (General Medicine Registrars) taking the 7th spot with 95% growth in job postings, and paediatricians placing 9th with 91% growth.
“The need to fill healthcare roles has remained consistent over the past few years, as highlighted in Indeed’s 2023 and 2024 Best Jobs lists”, an Indeed release stated.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are becoming essential components of many aspects of our lives, with their adoption growing at an unprecedented pace. Reflecting this trend, the demand for AI and ML expertise has surged. For the first time, AI/ML engineer has claimed the 10th spot on the list, with an impressive 86% increase in job postings over the past year.
So, what exactly do they do?
According to Indeed, AI/ML engineers develop intelligent systems by designing, training, and deploying machine learning models. They might work with large datasets to create algorithms that enable machines to learn, adapt, and make predictions or decisions. AI/ML engineers can collaborate with data scientists and software developers to integrate AI solutions into applications. Their work may span industries, driving innovation in areas like automation, natural language processing, and computer vision.
Danny Stacy, Head of Talent Intelligence at Indeed said that the list highlights the high demand for essential roles such as teachers, doctors and solicitors, as well as reflecting current emerging industries such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
“For jobseekers, this list serves as a valuable compass in today’s evolving job market – revealing promising career paths, growth industries, and opportunities they might not have otherwise considered”, he said.
Among the top 10 ranked jobs, paediatricians lead with the highest average salary at £106,048 (€125,547), followed by commercial directors at £81,802 (€96,840).
AI/ML Engineers also rank among the highest-paid roles on Indeed’s 2025 list, securing 4th place with an average annual salary of £68,560 (€81,163).
