With district play tipping off around the Lone Star State, the 2024-25 Texas boys and girls high school basketball season is starting to heat up.
Several of the Big Country’s sharpest shooters and most prolific playmakers put on electric performances to start the new year with a bang.
Here’s a closer look at the Big Country’s top performers on the basketball court for the week of Jan. 6-11, 2025:
Samia Cooper, Abilene High girls basketball
Cooper finished with a game-high 23 points in the Eagles’ 39-38 loss to Wichita Falls Legacy in District 4-5A play.
Isaac Martinez, Lingleville boys basketball
Martinez dropped a season-high 37 points on 14-of-21 shooting (66.7%) and 6-of-11 shooting on 3-pointers (54.5%) to go along with four assists, four steals and two rebounds in an 80-59 victory over Iredell.
Amiya Mayes, Abilene Cooper girls basketball
Mayes scored a game-high 19 points in the Cougars’ 52-44 loss to crosstown rival Abilene High in District 4-5A action.
Kyson McGee, Hamlin boys basketball
McGee powered the Pied Pipers to a runaway 88-20 win over Haskell Paint Creek by scoring a game-high 24 points for Hamlin.
Brooks Reese, Abilene High boys basketball
Reese knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and racked up a team-high 16 points to help lead the Eagles to a 57-53 victory against Wichita Falls Legacy in their District 4-5A opener.
Madi Renteria, Coahoma girls basketball
Renteria posted a double-double in the Bulldogs’ 61-39 win over Brownfield, tallying 15 points, 11 steals, seven rebounds, four assists and a block on 7-of-15 shooting (46.7%) for Coahoma.
Jorge Toledo, Lingleville boys basketball
Toledo left his mark in every phase of the game during the Cardinals’ 80-59 victory over Iredell by recording 23 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, six steals and two blocks on 11-of-16 shooting (68.8%).
Jariyis Williams, Munday boys basketball
Williams dropped a double-double that included a game-high 22 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals on 9-of-17 shooting (52.9%) to power the Moguls to a 67-44 win against Knox City.
