The crowds will be split with Bradford which came just ahead of Swindon in the ranking by “travel experts” Miss Tourist.
The group used Met Office data to find the top UK destinations for a ‘coolcation’ – a holiday in a cooler climate.
Yulia Saf, CEO and founder of Miss Tourist said: “As climate change impacts traditional holiday spots, destinations with cooler climates are becoming increasingly attractive for travellers seeking comfort and unique experiences year-round.
“Swindon stands out as an excellent coolcation destination, offering visitors a chance to enjoy outdoor activities and natural beauty in comfortable conditions.
“This region provides great opportunities for outdoor activities and sightseeing in comfortable temperatures, offering a practical alternative to traditional holiday spots affected by rising temperatures.”
The top places for a cooler holiday are in Scotland or the north of England – Aberdeen, Glasgow and Durham. Swindon came ninth.
Various metrics of Swindon’s climate were measured including average annual, summer, and winter temperatures, days of air frost, and altitude.
Yulia calls herself a “world traveller, adventurer and entrepreneur” having travelled full-time for the last six years and visited around 70 countries.
Swindon’s appeal as a place to visit has always been a point of contention, with top landmarks generally being made of concrete and a dodgy reputation in pop culture.
But in 2007, the Holiday Inn hotel chain named Swindon its fastest-growing holiday destination after bookings at its Swindon hotels jumped up by almost 12 per cent.
Holiday Inn said at the time that having the celebrity endorsement of architect and Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud, who worked on eco-housing in the town, helped boost Swindon’s image.
Mr McCloud said: “Swindon is a delight – I love it.
“I travel all over Britain, I look at a lot of really c*** towns and Swindon is not a c*** town.”
Alexi Hakim, InterContinental Hotels Group chief operating officer in the UK, added: “Holiday Inn customers certainly seem to agree with Kevin McCloud that Swindon has lots to offer visitors.
“It’s great to see towns and cities which have been bashed by critics enjoying a popular renaissance.”
Swindon is also known for its celebrity citizens including Billie Piper, Melinda Messenger and Diana Dors.
