Set 165 runs to win on the back of a David Warner masterclass, the home side bowled exceptionally well despite the competitive total set by the Thunder, before winning with 19 balls to spare.
Warner, who hit his fourth consecutive score of 49 or more, ended 88 not out from 66 balls in an innings that threatened to derail the home side’s efforts in the field.

So much so was his controlled temperament, that it was the Australian great’s highest ever Big Bash score without a six. But alas, it wasn’t enough to see his side keep their spot at the top of the table as his teammates failed to give enough support of their own.
Only Sam Billings (28 runs off 15 balls) and Ollie Davies (17 off 17) reached double figures, as teenage Test sensation Sam Konstas departed for four straight after a bizarre Warner bat break.

While Riley Meredith (2/30 off four overs) was the sole bowler to take multiple wickets, Nathan Ellis, Chris Jordan and Nikhil Chaudhary each took one pole to keep the target within reasonable reaching distance.
Leg-spinner Peter Hatzoglou (0/29 off four) also bowled very well without luck, in a great first game back since New Year’s Day.
“He hasn’t got a wicket, but he’s done his job for the skipper,” former Australian quick Brendan Julian said on Fox Cricket at the conclusion of the leg-spinner’s four overs.
From there, Matthew Wade (13 off 5) and Mitch Owen (13 off 6) got the home side of to an absolute flyer before Tim David went berserk to smoke 68 not out from just 38 rocks in an innings that featured six sixes and four fours.
Left-arm orthodox spinner Tom Andrews (1/17 off four) was the only Thunder bowler to show any resistance, while English import George Garton (2/31 off three) briefly put his side in the hunt for full points.
Pace-off deliveries worked well for the Hurricanes pace bowlers earlier in the evening, so it was no surprise to see Andrews cash in on the back of some smart bowling.
It was the Power Surge that dispelled any hopes of a Thunder upset though, as the Hurricanes put the game to bed in the in the 14th and 15th over thanks to some ineffective execution.
A whopping 38 runs came from the two-over powerplay, where David ran rampant on the pace-on bowling of his rival quicks. Four of his last nine balls for the night ended up in the crowd, as he was well-supported by veteran pom Chris Jordan (18* off 13).
In the only sour note for the night, the Hurricanes will be sweating on the fitness of key player Ben McDermott. The right-handed big-hitter grabbed at his hamstring while fielding in the 18th over, and was pushed down the batting order in favour of Chris Jordan as a precaution.
The injury cloud came at an extra unfortunate time for the 30-year-old, who was playing his 100th career Big Bash game. He will be tasked with a very quick turnaround if his hamstring injury truly is anything to be worried about, with his side’s next game on January 15.
The Thunder will be the first of the two sides to get back out on the park, with a clash against the Perth Scorchers next Monday night.
