WASHINGTON (TNND) — In this first full week of the new Congress, Republicans have re-introduced legislation barring transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., is leading the way in the Senate while Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., has sponsored the House version. The “Protection of Women and Girls in Sport Act” amends Title IX, prohibiting its application to those born male who transitioned to female
The bill defines sex as based “solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.” The new Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has begun taking necessary steps to bring the bill to the floor for a vote in the coming weeks.
This comes as a federal judge in Kentucky tossed out the Biden Administration’s Title IX re-write where they attempted to redefine “sex” as “gender identity.”
“It’s a tremendous win for women and girls across this nation,” said Kristen Waggoner, the CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom, to Fox News. “It’s the first nationwide injunction that has been imposed to stop the Biden Administration from forcing a national mandate on all federally funded schools to violate the rights of women and girls.”
Fatima Goss Grave, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, told the Washington Post, that the decision “displays extraordinary disregard for students who are the most vulnerable to discrimination.”
Transgender issues played a key role in the 2024 presidential election. In December, President-elect Donald Trump promised to take executive action on the issue on day one in office.
“With the stroke of my pen on day one we are going to stop the transgender lunacy,” said Trump. “And we will keep men out of women’s sports.”
