The recently concluded 2024 Thoroughbred racing season at Woodbine saw jockey Sahin Civaci, trainer Mark Casse and owner Bruno Schickedanz take top honors.
Sahin Civaci earned his first Woodbine riding title with 170 wins. The Vancouver-born Civaci built off a breakout 2023 season to lead all Woodbine jockeys in 2024, winning at impressive clip of 26%.
Notable wins on the year for Civaci included the Grade 2 King Edward with Filo Di Arianna and Eclipse (G2) with Palazzi. Civaci also led all jockeys in earnings with US$6.6 million.
Rafael Hernandez was second in wins with 140, and Fraser Aebly finished third with 73.
Trainer Mark Casse collected his 16th Woodbine training title. The Hall of Fame trainer sent out 108 winners during the 2024 meet, including a record 33 stakes winners.
Casse’s biggest win of the season in Toronto was a victory in the Woodbine Mile (G1) with Win for the Money. His 2-year-old filly And One More Time also was victorious that same day in the Natalma (G1).
Casse’s starters in 2024 racked up over $7.3 million in earnings at Woodbine.
Martin Drexler was second among trainers in wins with 82, and Kevin Attard sent out 80 winners. Attard’s barn was second in earnings, compiling an impressive $4.7 million .
Bruno Schickedanz extended his streak of most wins by an owner to 10 consecutive seasons in 2024. Horses owned by Schickedanz won 65 races and earned over $1.9 million.
Gary Barber finished second in wins, 26 and earnings, $1.5 million, for owners.
A total of 127 race days were conducted during the 2024 Thoroughbred season at Woodbine.
