Top travel tips to sleigh the holiday rush
’Twas the flight before Christmas, and all through the airport, not a creature was still, not even the queues…
The festive travel season may be bustling, but with the right preparation, you can avoid the common pitfalls. Air New Zealand has compiled a handy list of travel tips to help passengers navigate the holidays with ease:
Arrive early and be gate-ready: Domestic travellers should be at their gate 30 minutes before departure. International flyers need 45 minutes. Some gates might take longer to reach, so don’t hesitate to ask the friendly airport team for assistance if you’re unsure.
Check your baggage allowance: Make sure your ticket includes the correct baggage allowance for both carry-on and checked luggage. Overpacking could lead to delays at check-in, so plan ahead.
Think before you wrap: Planning to travel with Christmas presents? Keep them unwrapped! Security screening may require you to unwrap them.
Stay covered: Travel insurance is your best friend during the holiday season. Unexpected delays or disruptions can be stressful, but a good policy will give you peace of mind.
Pack smart: Festive travellers, take note: the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website has a list of restricted items, so check before packing any Christmas goodies. That portable charger for Uncle Nick? Pack it in your carry on!
Sign up for travel alerts: Stay informed by signing up for Air New Zealand travel alerts. Real-time updates can make all the difference in a busy airport.
Patience is key: Security lines and boarding processes may take longer than usual. Air New Zealand’s team encourages passengers to “please be patient and respectful to airport staff, crew, and fellow travellers”.
Some other things to keep in mind:
Travelling with pets or oversized items? Plan extra time for check-in to ensure all is in order.
Heading to the Pacific Islands? Double-check entry requirements and bring any necessary documents, especially if you’re travelling with kids.
Bringing the kids? Pack snacks, entertainment, and plenty of patience to keep little ones happy during any waiting periods.

Dunedin and Napier: These charming spots will each see over 120,000 passengers arriving and departing.
International hotspots
Overseas destinations are also calling, with Australia leading the charge. Over 450,000 customers are flying to and from Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, making Australia the number one international destination.
Further afield, Los Angeles is hosting more than 50,000 travellers, while Tokyo sees a 20% year-on-year increase with nearly 50,000 passengers.
