KOLKATA: Jyothi Surekha Vennam followed her gold medal-winning finish at GT Open in at Luxembourg with another top of the podium show in Taipei Archery Open, the third leg of the Indoor World Series. The Andhra girl reigned supreme in the women’s compound individual competition beating local archer Chen Yu Ju 144-140 in the final on Sunday.
Indian archers picked up two more medals with Prathamesh Fuge and Ankita Bhakat clinching bronze in men’s compound and women’s recurve catego ries. Atul Verma, who overcame countrymate and Olympian Dhiraj Bommadevara (6-5) in the second round, narrowly missed out on another medal as he went down to South Koran Lee Seungshin in the shootout (6-5) in a bronze-medal match in men’s recurve event.
Jyothi, who qualified as the top seed with 592 points shooting 60 arrows from 18 metres, maintained a consistent run beating her teammate Parneet Kaur in the quarters (148-146). The 28-year old multiple World Cup medallist hit scores of 29 in the first four ends to take a three-point lead. She lost the final end, but still managed to get the gold.
Fuge defeated Ojas Deotale, who qualified third while making a comeback to the international arena after almost a year due to injury, in the quarters while experienced Abhishek Verma too was ousted in the last-eight stage, qualifying second. The 21-year-old Fuge won the bronze medal on his debut at the Indoor World Series beating Kim Jongho of South Korea 147-144.
