A running watch, smartwatch, or fitness tracker can help you stay more active and ready to move. We’ve tested several wellness-oriented devices from the biggest names in the wearables game.
Here are our recommendations for all fitness and motivation levels.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is the company’s latest smartwatch. It’s slimmer than its predecessor but has a larger and brighter display. (There’s even enough room for another line of text!)
It also boasts an upgraded processor, titanium case, and minor design improvements. It shares the same battery life and pricing as the Series 9. And we love it just as much!
The Apple Watch Series 9 is an all-in-one wearable for iPhone and Apple users. It’s packed with sensors to track movement, numerous workout types, and general wellness stats like heart rate and sleep. The ring system also serves as motivation to stay active all day.
The Series 9 is also very refined looking and customizable and has all the smarts you’d want in a smartwatch, from the ability to answer calls with a double-tap gesture to paying for groceries and playing music.
For Android users, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is an appealing counterpart to the Apple Watch. It’s packed with a suite of health tools, from workout tracking to body composition measurement and snoring detection.
Like the Apple Watch, the Watch 6 offers the latest smart features, including contactless pay, media streaming, and app integrations. The experience is also incredibly smooth if you own a Galaxy smartphone; without one, you’ll need a couple of supporting apps.
Garmin is known for its adventure-ready running watches, but the Vivoactive 5 bundles many of the brand’s top-notch fitness features in a more daily-wear-friendly and affordable package.
In addition to running and other workout tracking, the Vivoactive 5 offers stress level and training readiness scores based on sleep patterns and heart rate changes. On the smart front, a paired Android phone allows for notifications and texting.
The Garmin Forerunner 265 is a quintessential flagship running watch. It’s a good bet if you’re serious about leveling up your running routine.
In addition to sport-specific stats like cadence, pace, and intensity levels, the 265 offers workout plans, a race predictor, and a recovery time tool to optimize training. Smart features include Garmin Pay, music storage, and live location tracking.
If you’re looking for a lightweight fitness tracker, the Fitbit Inspire 3 offers motivation to log your steps and monitor your sleep quality and calorie intake.
Smart features are limited; you’ll need your phone’s GPS to track walks or runs and view notifications. But this slim wearable could be an ideal aid and starting point if you want extra motivation.
The Suunto Race is an alternative to the Garmin 265 from another adventure-loving smartwatch brand. It comes with a Suunto Coach to help you train, monitor energy levels and training load, and plan workouts, but the metrics might not be as detailed as Garmin’s.
This smartwatch eclipses the Garmin 265 on battery performance, boasting up to 26 days or about 40 hours in full-time GPS running mode. It also features a digital crown, which offers quick navigation and smart looks.
A running watch on a budget can be tricky, but the Amazfit Balance checks those boxes in a stylish package fit with a vibrant AMOLED display and a digital crown.
Though it’s not as detailed or rugged as pricier models, it offers all the basic stats for running workouts, plus a few extras like a meditation app and blood oxygen and body composition measurements.
