BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Police are investigating an incident that happened at the Topgolf in Birmingham Sunday evening.
Investigators say the business temporarily went on lockdown after someone fired shots in the area.
A Topgolf spokesperson says this is an active investigation and is working closely with BPD. WBRC spoke to Birmingham City Councilor Hunter Williams who says gun violence is a problem in our communities, but officers are working hard to keep places like these safe.
“Well, I frequent that area, or I go to that area; is my safety at risk when I do?” asks Williams.
Williams serves on the city public safety board and says these are questions neighbors have as gun violence continues to be an issue in our community, especially in our entertainment districts.
“These incidents, for the most part, are targeted isolated incidents where we have people that have come to a certain place that is in dispute that stems from an illegal activity, or they go somewhere to perform an illegal activity like buying narcotics,” Williams explains.
Birmingham Police are working to identify a suspect. They say the suspect fired shots at a group of men. An occupied vehicle was hit, but no one was shot. All of this happened around 5:40 p.m.
There is no one in custody.
Williams says neighbors should not be afraid to go out.
“Have situational awareness about where you are and where you park. Is it well-lit? Are you in an area where you feel safe getting to and from? And also, don’t put yourself at unnecessary risk. If you are meeting up to do something illegal, obviously, you are putting yourself at unnecessary risk,” says Williams.
Top Golf shared the following statement which says in part:
“Rest assured, the safety of our Players and Playmakers has been and continues to be of the utmost importance for all of our venues around the globe.”
