On the back of an encouraging effort in a Newcastle race that has thrown up a few subsequent winners, FLYING SCOTSMAN is taken to record a first success since joining Ben Haslam. Unique Spirit (second choice) commands respect kept to this C&D, while Catalan King is still open to further improvement in handicaps and Zephlyn looks solid back on AW.
Off an attractive mark and with Silvestre De Sousa doing the steering, NELSON GAY is taken to regain the winning thread. Love Wars (second choice) and A Girl Named Ivy have possibilities at this level, provided they take well to the surface, while Water Of Leith looks likely to remain competitive.
A chance is taken on GANESHA, who wouldn’t be first choice on 2024 form but is interesting off a very handy mark returned to the scene of his final 2yo win. Spirit Of Applause, who looks solid on recent efforts, is second choice ahead of Zuffolo, Gustav Graves and Leodis Dream.
In-form Richard Hughes has enjoyed a fine season with 2yos on the AW, with 14 winners from 40 runners, and the keen-going POUTING, who runs without the hood down in trip after a short break, is fancied to further enhance the numbers. An 11lb rise will test easy Musselburgh winner Lady Roxby, leaving Force And Valour as second choice.
The best may be yet to come from BEAT THE CLOCK, who’s settled better of late and looks capable of more over this trip, with his latest third well advertised since. Kokinelli is another to consider in a handicap in which all seven could have a case made for them.
Bushfire returns to Tapeta on a 9lb lower mark than for last autumn’s C&D win and is one to consider in first-time cheekpieces, but preference is for the equally well-handicapped KING OF YORK, whose 7f win here in March came off 9lb higher. Frequent slow-starter Dr Rio’s latest win has been well advertised since but he’s down in trip and will need to improve on previous Tapeta efforts.
