New Zealand will be looking to play positive cricket as they aim to end the first Test match quickly. Meanwhile, India will hope to replicate past successes as they seek to defend the lowest fourth-innings total in their Test history. An exciting day of Test cricket is set to unfold at the Chinnaswamy Stadium today.
Earlier on Day 4, extensive rains shortly after the start of New Zealand’s innings led to stumps being called for the day. The Men in Blue were bowled out for 462 runs, setting a target of 107 runs for the Kiwis. While this total may seem modest, it is larger than what India initially felt they could have achieved and smaller than what they would have hoped for after the platform set by Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant.
As for the Indian batting, Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant were the stars of the show. Sarfaraz, who was only playing because Shubman Gill was injured, not only reached his maiden Test hundred but also converted it into a score of 150. Meanwhile, Pant’s counterattacking innings turned the tide against the visitors but ended tragically, with the left-hander falling just one run short of his century.
Prior to that, Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan had formed a partnership of 136 runs off 163 balls. However, Virat Kohli (70) was caught by Tom Blundell on the last delivery of Day 3, nearly extinguishing the hopes of Indian cricket fans.
New Zealand, William O’Rourke and Matt Henry took three wickets each, Ajaz Patel picked two wickets, while Tim Southee and Glenn Phillips clinched one wicket each.
After losing Yashasvi Jaiswal (35) and Rohit Sharma (52), Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan posted a partnership of 136 runs off 163 balls. However, Virat Kohli (70) was caught by Blundell on the last delivery of 49th over, bowled by Glenn Phillips. Sarfaraz was still batting at 70 when Stumps was declared for DAY 3.

I had called 2 initially but then remembered he was having knee pain. Thank God he survived that,”
“Just that runs score freely. We were having good conversation. I wanted to give him singles as we know what he can do. It is not an easy wicket. We are still in the game. The ball is turning. If we can get 2-3 quick wickets, then NZ will have some troubles,” the Indian batter added
India vs New Zealand Live: After a sensational innings by Sarfaraz Khan on Day 4 of India vs New Zealand 1st test, an old comment by Sunil Gavaskar defending the batter has gone viral.
Gavaskar told India Today last year, “If you are looking for only slim and trim guys, then might as well go to a fashion show and find some other models and give a bat and ball in their hands and then improve them. That’s not the way cricket goes. You have cricketers in all shapes and sizes. Don’t go by the size, go by the scores or wickets. He is not staying off the field when he scores a hundred. He is back on the field again. So, all that tells you is that the man is fit,”
“How can you score runs? I think at the end of the day if you are unfit, you aren’t gonna score hundreds. Cricket fitness is the most important thing. Yo-Yo Test can’t be the only criterion. You got to make sure that the man is cricket fit as well. If the person, whoever it is, is cricket fit, then I don’t think it should be any matter,” the former cricketer added
India vs New Zealand Live: Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar said, “Very happy to see the way he plays fast bowlers, and he has played fast bowlers before as well against England. This was a pitch very similar to the foreign pitches that we get, where there is a bit of pace and bounce. Interestingly, I am imagining him on a flatter pitch in Australia, where there isn’t a lot of seam movement,”
“He is going to give migraines to those Australian bowlers because of the shots that he plays. There is certainity, there is calmness and if you see the close up of Sarfaraz, he watches the ball always on to his bat. He has a tremendous hand-eye coordination. His technique isn’t bad for Australia. I will be very excited to see how he goes, and he is a definite candidate, and he should walk into the India playing XI against Australia,” the former Indian cricketer added
