New Delhi: England batting sensation Joe Root has leapfrogged Kiwi veteran Kane Williamson to reclaim the top spot in the ICC Test batting rankings. On back of his superlative match-winning performance in the first innings of the Test match against West Indies, Root reclaimed the top spot. The veteran batter produced a match-winning knock of 87 runs in the Birmingham Test.
Rookie wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith also featured among the big movers in the rankings, going up 31 places to hold the 64th spot. Root achieved an incredible landmark in the Test match where he went past Brian Lara’s Test match tally of 11,953 to become the seventh highest run-getter in the format’s history. With 12,207, Root has the most runs among active Test cricketers with Steven Smith (9685) and Virat Kohli (8848) behind him.
Meanwhile, English pacer Mark Wood’s player of the match performance of 7 for 92 lifted him into the top 20 of the bowling rankings for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, in the T20I rankings, Yashasvi Jaiswal made a considerable gain as he was back at the number fourth position after massing 80 runs at a strike rate of 178 in the three-match series against Sri Lanka which his side won 3-0.
Shubman Gill, meanwhile has moved up to 16 places to a career-best position of 21. The third T20I match between India and Sri Lanka proved to be an unexpected one which tables kept turning till the end but a super over decided the contest in India’s favour.
Meanwhile for Sri Lanka, Pathum Nissanka (up 11 places to 15th) and Kusal Perera (up 40 places to joint-63rd) are the others to move up the batting rankings. India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who has been ranked No. 1 T20I bowler in the past, is back in the top 10.
