Top Korean News Of The Week: BTS’ V Unveils New Solo Project TYPE 1, 2NE1 To Reunite For Comeback
On June 25, BIGHIT MUSIC dropped a mysterious poster to announce V’s new project TYPE 1. As buzz about the project grew across social media, BTS’ label announced that the Slow Dancing singer would be releasing his first self-composed photobook on July 9. The photobook, that captures V’s comfortable self as he enjoys a break from his busy schedule, was completely planned and prepared by the BTS star himself.
A 2NE1 comeback might be in the works! YG Entertainment recently announced that all four 2NE1 members had shared an “extremely meaningful” conversation with label’s founder Yang Hyun-suk during a two hours long meeting. The label stated, “This was Yang Hyun-suk and the 2NE1 members’ first conversation in eight years. Although no concrete plans have been made, Yang Hyun-suk listened to the members’ requests and empathized with them, so we are looking forward to being able to convey good news to the fans soon.”
It’s been a big week for SEVENTEEN! On June 26, the K-pop group were appointed as UNESCO’s first-ever Goodwill Ambassador for Youth. On the same day, SEVENTEEN’s sub-unit BSS’ hit track Fighting was chosen as the official cheering song for the South Korean team at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Following that, on June 28, SEVENTEEN made history as the first K-pop act to perform at the Glastonbury Festival. The group performed a bunch of their hit tracks at the music festival, including, HOT, Ready to Love, God of Music and more.
Both BTS’ Jimin and Blackpink’s Lisa made a comeback on June 28! While Lisa returned to the music scene with ROCKSTAR, Jimin dropped his pre-release track Smeraldo Garden Marching Band featuring Loco.
K-drama star Kim Woo-bin has purchased the former headquarters of Bighit Entertainment. According to a copy of the Supreme Court register, the Our Blues actor bought the building, that is located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, under his own name on June 25. Won-bin purchased the historic office building, which housed BTS from 2007 to 2011, for a whopping 13.7 billion won (Rs 82 crore).
Amid their ongoing feud with SM Entertainment over royalties, EXO‘s Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin have filed a lawsuit against their former label’s executives on the charges of fraud. “The members and INB100 filed a complaint with the Seongdong Police Station in Seoul against SM Entertainment’s CAO Lee Sung-soo and co-CEO Tak Young-jun for fraud in violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment etc. of Specific Economic Crimes,” the trio’s current label stated.
