Check out our tips and best bets for Saturday’s racing around Australia, including the G1 day at Doomben, plus Sandown Hillside, Randwick, Belmont and Murray Bridge.
BEST BETS
Sandown Race 10 No.7 Nicolini Vito
Nicolini Vito (7) needs another win (8:0-2-0 across the last 12 months) but his 2nd at Flemington last Saturday was excellent behind the in-form Who Dares. They spaced the rest and the rise to 1400m is certainly no issue for the Hayes veteran. His other two efforts this campaign have also been rock-solid and he’s 1 from 1 at this track. If they’re running on from the back in earlier races, he’ll take plenty of holding out.
Doomben Race 7 No.2 Zoe’s Promise
Hard to go past Zoe’s Promise (2) which was a class above when resuming at Eagle Farm and gets up to her favourite trip. She struggled in this race last year but is a Group 2 winner over this trip, will box seat and is the one to beat.
Randwick Race 8 No.17 Miss You Ella
Miss You Ella (17) has a tidy CV of 13 starts for 3 wins and 4 placings. Those wins were all at Gulfstream Park in sunny Florida at 1673m or what the Americans call a mile. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Vow And Declare’s father, Declaration of War, resumes over the Randwick Mile on Saturday with no weight to speak off. Market watch seriously advised.
BEST VALUE
Sandown Race 7 No.10 Deepstrike
Deepstrike’s (10) form across his last four starts looks bog-average but I think he can improve here. His first-up run over 1600m was forgivable, with runners basically holding their positions throughout in a race that was completely on-pace dominated. Hopefully there is a bit more pace on here and Yendall can have him a touch closer in the run from barrier three. He’s a two-time winner when second-up and boasts a terrific record at this track/distance (4:2-1-0).
Doomben Race 2 No.2 Hold On Honey
They will take no prisoners here and Hold On Honey (2) has been freshened after having veterinary excuses last start. He won a recent trial, has an excellent Doomben record and his best efforts come when first-up. A tongue-tie goes on and with Emily Lang’s 3kg he will be up the front for a long way.
Randwick Race 10 No.18 Skywolf
Skywolf (18e) has quite the creditable strike-rate of 5 wins from 20 starts. The Team Hawkes trained chestnut has really caught the eye for a horse whose last three runs are ‘596’. Granted his record circa the 1400m is less than compelling, but he just looks to be crying out for it now and surely Randwick suits him down to the ground. Warning – sting out looks a prerequisite.
