One of Rutgers basketball’s top targets in the 2025 recruiting class has set a decision date for his commitment.
Jaylen Harrell, a four-star prospect from Massachusetts, plans to announce his college destination on Monday, May 27th, according to a report from On3′s Joe Tipton. He will decide between a final group of six schools: the Scarlet Knights, Alabama, Kansas, Providence, Virginia Tech and Xavier.
The 90th-ranked prospect in his class according to the 247Sports Composite, Harrell would become Rutgers’ first commit of the 2025 cycle if he chooses Steve Pikiell’s program.
The 6-foot-6 forward, who stars for Cambridge Arts, Technology and Science Academy in high school and Expressions Elite on the Nike EYBL AAU circuit, took an official visit to Piscataway in late January, watching the Scarlet Knights nearly upset eventual national runner-up Purdue.
Despite the result, Harrell came away impressed.
“The atmosphere at the game was crazy,” he told NJ Advance Media the following week. “The visit was great. They love my scoring ability and the energy I give on both sides of the floor.”
Harrell has a good relationship with assistant coach TJ Thompson and said Pikiell is “a great coach.”
“He will do anything for his players,” he said. “He always brings the energy no matter what.”
To date, Harrell has also taken an official visit to Providence. He told Tipton that he’s scheduled a visit to Xavier for May 20th and is also working on scheduling a trip to Virginia Tech.
For the Scarlet Knights, adding Harrell would be a strong start to a class that follows the greatest recruiting coup in program history. That appears to be part of their pitch to him, based on what he told On3 earlier this year:
“They contact me a lot and I could see myself playing there just because of their style of play. They love bucket-getters and people who can score at will. I know they would challenge me to play just as much defense as (offense). They also told me they want me to be the guy after Dylan (Harper) and Ace (Bailey) are gone, so that intrigues me.”
