Less than 25 years after Topgolf was founded in the United Kingdom, the golf entertainment brand has reached a significant milestone, opening its 100th global outdoor location with the debut of its newest venue in Montebello, California, about 10 minutes east of downtown Los Angeles.
Topgolf has firmly established itself as the unrivaled worldwide leader in the golf entertainment space, adding 300,000 to 400,000 unique visitors with each new venue, and projects to have over 30 million unique visitors in 2024.
When Topgolf began expanding nationally after first coming to the U.S. in 2005, there was some debate within the golf industry on whether this new approach would take away business from actual golf courses. However, the brand has become the most visible and complimentary entertainment golf component within the modern golf ecosystem, offering a new pathway to traditional green-grass golf with its high-tech and highly social modern driving ranges. Approximately 10% of the current 26.6 million on-course golfers credit off-course experience at places like Topgolf in helping them get their start in the game, according to research from the National Golf Foundation.
The total number of Americans who play forms of golf away from a golf course climbed to nearly 33 million in total in 2023, more than the on-course golfer base, which has seen six straight years of participation increases.
Topgolf 100th global venue encapsulates how Topgolf Callaway’s successful golf entertainment arm, which had $1.76 billion in net revenues in 2023, has embraced its place within the broader game of golf. The three-story, 102-bay facility anchors the redesigned Montebello Golf Course, a municipal complex owned by the City of Montebello and operated by Troon Golf. The former 18-hole public course was closed in September of 2022 to be transformed into two courses: a traditional 9-hole course, and a new nine-hole Par 3 course with lighting to play at night.
The redevelopment project also includes a new clubhouse as well as water features across the facility, which is scheduled to complete renovations next month and re-open in early summer.
While the Montebello Topgolf venue isn’t formally associated with the golf course and operates independently, having the two next to one another is a clear example of how the two different forms of the game can co-exist.
“Having a green-grass course next to our off-course experience is a prime example of how the game of golf continues to grow and evolve, and bringing our own unique and accessible style of play to the sport is what we’re all about,” said Topgolf Senior Vice President of Global Operations Mike Mann.
The Montebello location is the 90th outdoor Topgolf venue in the U.S. and the fifth in California. The company has locations in 35 states in total as well as international facilities in Australia, China, Germany, Mexico, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates in addition to the U.K. There are also forthcoming locations in Colombia, Indonesia, Portugal and Spain.
