(KMAland) — The 18th week of the 2024-25 sports calendar year is here, and I’ve got some points to make on this Monday.
Here are Seven Points, detailing the last week of KMAland athletics just in case you got a little busy with your last-minute Christmas shopping and missed something.
The Martin Blog today is brought to you by Malvern Bank.
Point 1: KMAland Iowa girls basketball conference standings update
Hawkeye Ten: St. Albert (5-0) is flying through the conference schedule and are well on their way to their second consecutive conference championship. Harlan (4-0) could stand in the way of that, but the Saintes do have a non-conference win over them already. Atlantic (2-1) and Lewis Central (2-1) are other contenders just one game back in the loss column. Shenandoah (2-2) took their shot at St. Albert and narrowly missed.
Corner: Stanton (3-0) and East Mills (3-0) lead the charge here with Fremont-Mills (3-1) and Sidney (3-1) both taking losses to one of those teams (FM to East Mills, Sidney to Stanton).
Western Iowa: Treynor (4-0) is going to be a tough egg to crack, and they have been dominant against league foes. Riverside (3-1) has yet to play Treynor while Underwood (2-1) has their only conference loss to the Cardinals.
Pride of Iowa: Mount Ayr (4-0) has a game up on Martensdale-St. Marys (4-1) thanks to the conference win over them in the first half. Lenox (3-1) also has one loss, but they’ve yet to play Mount Ayr and lost to MSTM. There seems to be a clear pecking order with Central Decatur (3-2) the only other team above .500 in the league.
Rolling Valley: Woodbine (4-0) and Coon Rapids-Bayard (3-0) are at the top of the Rolling Valley mountain at the moment. Exira/EHK (2-2), Boyer Valley (2-2) and CAM (2-2) are the only other teams in the conference right now at .500 or better.
Missouri River: Bishop Heelan Catholic (4-0) is at the top of the perch with Sioux City East (4-1) and Sioux City West (3-1) one game back in the loss column. Heelan beat East while East beat West. Abraham Lincoln (2-2) is the only team at .500 or better.
Bluegrass: Ankeny Christian (4-0) and Melcher-Dallas (4-0) were the two preseason favorites, and that’s where they stand right now. Oreint-Macksburg (2-1), Seymour (2-1) and Lamoni (2-1) are all one game back in the loss column with losses to Melcher-Dallas, Murray and Moravia, respectively.
Point 2: KMAland Iowa boys basketball conference standings update
Hawkeye Ten: Glenwood (5-0) has the best undefeated record, but they are joined in that undefeated column by Lewis Central (3-0) and Kuemper Catholic (2-0). I think a betting man would say Kuemper is the favorite at this particular point in time. Clarinda is a salty 4-1 with their only loss to Glenwood, and Harlan and St. Albert are both 2-2.
Corner: Bedford (4-0) is also a heavy favorite here with their 4-0 start and dominant performance within. Sidney (3-1) has their only loss to Bedford while East Mills (2-1) also lost to Bedford for their only defeat. Fremont-Mills is 2-2.
Western Iowa: Treynor (5-0) and Tri-Center (4-0) have yet to meet, but when they do someone is going to get a loss. They are the top two teams, and there is nobody within a game of them in the loss column, harkening back to last year’s league when Underwood and Treynor ruled it. Audubon, Riverside and Underwood are all 2-2.
Pride of Iowa: Mount Ayr (4-0) is on top here, too, with their win over Martensdale-St. Marys (4-1) representing the Blue Devils only loss. Southeast Warren (4-1) has a loss to MSTM that has them one game back in the loss column. Central Decatur (3-2), Lenox (2-2) and Southwest Valley (2-2) are all above or at .500.
Rolling Valley: Again, Coon Rapids-Bayard (4-0) and Woodbine (4-0) are at the top here. Glidden-Ralston (4-1) is a game back in the loss column with their only defeat to Woodbine. Ar-We-Va (2-2) has lost to both CRB and Woodbine.
Missouri River: Sioux City East (5-0) and Abraham Lincoln (4-0) continue to hold down the fort at the top of the MRC standings. Sioux City North (3-1) lost to Heelan while Sergeant Bluff-Luton (2-1) lost to AL for their only conference losses of the year.
Bluegrass: And finally, we have the Bluegrass where Ankeny Christian (4-0) is out to a solid lead. Mormon Trail (3-1) has their only loss to Ankeny Christian while Seymour (3-1) lost to Murray and Murray (3-1) lost to Mormon Trail. Moravia (2-1) took their only loss to Ankeny Christian.
