Here are the biggest winners and losers from the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend.
Just before the All-Star Game, LeBron announced he couldn’t play due to ankle and foot pain, leaving no time for replacements like Domantas Sabonis. Edwards also missed the game because of groin soreness.
Castle was named MVP of the Rising Stars Challenge, scoring 12 points to help Team C win. In the dunk contest, he scored a perfect 50 on his final dunk and narrowly lost to a top competitor. He’s a strong Rookie of the Year contender if the San Antonio Spurs stay competitive in the play-in race.

Mac McClung impressed with stunts like jumping over a car and a hoverboard, winning the dunk contest. In contrast, Castle’s simpler, more athletic dunks focused on just the ball and the basket, deserving more recognition. This approach reminded some of past contests where raw talent was overshadowed by prop-heavy routines. While props can add excitement, there should be limits to their use.
Wemby boldly stated he wasn’t there to make friends and was focused on competing. On the court, he backed it up with intense defence, playing harder than most except Giannis. While stars like LeBron and Curry were celebrated, it felt like Wemby had a chance to take the NBA further, as noted in a conversation with Anthony Edwards.
The skills challenge is often seen as forgettable. CP and Wemby highlighted its lack of significance by getting disqualified for bending the rules, creating a moment that will be remembered, but not for the right reasons. If you can’t remember the winners from previous years, it proves the point.
Winner: Everyone’s dream of someday replacing the skills challenge with a one-on-one contest
A one-on-one tournament at NBA All-Star Weekend could add excitement, with matchups like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander vs. Anthony Edwards or Kyrie Irving vs. Steph Curry. Giannis Antetokounmpo showed interest, and a sponsor could offer a cash prize to make it happen, featuring both All-Stars and other players.
Loser: Andre Jackson Jr.
Jackson’s dunks were unimpressive, raising questions about which dunkers turned down the NBA’s invitation and how far down the list they went before selecting him.

During the skills challenge, Kevin Harlan remarked that Wembanyama’s intentional mistakes mirrored Chris Paul’s competitive drive. Paul, known for his rule adherence, is willing to do anything to win. He and Wembanyama turned the challenge into a mockery, with Wemby taking credit later, supported by Draymond Green. It was clear Wembanyama was influenced by Paul’s approach.
The NBA All-Star game’s new format faced criticism for low effort and long breaks. Exciting moments were overshadowed by energy-draining tributes. Players suggested shorter breaks, and a Team USA vs. Team International format may be considered next year.
