Aryna Sabalenka won her second Grand Slam of 2024, defeating Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in Saturday’s US Open women’s singles final. Later today, Jannick Sinner and Taylor Fritz will battle it out for the men’s singles title in the last major event of the season.
It’s been a productive year for both the Belarusian and the Italian in terms of what they have won out on court and in terms of prize money. Sabalenka got 2024 off to a great start by beating China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2 to win the Australian Open, and while she has been hampered by fitness issues, she added the Cincinnati Open to her honors list and clinched her third career singles Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows this weekend.
Sinner also began the year well by winning the men’s single event at the the Australian Open back in January. He beat Daniil Medvedev 3–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3 to secure his first Grand Slam and take home a cool $3.15 million in prize money.
Prize money has increased across the board in tennis’ major tournaments in 2024. The purse for the Australian Open was $57,891,855 – a 6 percent increase on 2023 while other events also saw prize money boosted – the purse for Roland Garros this year was €53,478,000 ($59.2 million), up 7.82% from 2023; Wimbledon also saw a record rise from £44,700,000 in 2023 to £50,000,000 ($63,395,000).
According to the most recent figures (26 August), Carlos Alcaraz has enjoyed the best year economically, having taken his annual pre-tax earnings to $8,015,657,
It’s been another vintage year for the Spaniard, who was triumphant at Indian Wells, Roland Garros and Wimbledon although he could be knocked off top spot by Sinner if the Italian prevails in today’s US Open men’s final.
There’s also the chance that Taylor Fritz could come out on top in today’s final – the American has an annual total of $2,565,435 but could double that, adding another $3.6 million in prize money if he beats Sinner in New York.
In the women’s ranking, following Saturday’s triumph over Jessica Pegula, Sabalenka will have snatched top spot from world No.1 Iga Swiatek. The Pole topped the WTA ranking with total cash prizes of $6,985,693 in 2024. Aryna was just behind her on $4,384,145 but that figure doesn’t include the $3.6 million she will have collected for her US Open win.
The figures related to earnings gained from official tournament prize money only and does not include other, additional income such as endorsements, sponsorship deals etc.
