As the SA20 prepares for its third season, kicking off on January 9, 2025, with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape taking on MI Cape Town, it’s worth looking back at the thrilling 2024 season, where the Sunrisers clinched their second consecutive title.
League Stage Drama
The season started with rain washing out the opening match between the Sunrisers and Joburg Super Kings in Gqeberha. The Super Kings were also involved in the only other rain-affected game of the league, against Pretoria Capitals in Centurion. Despite these setbacks, the league progressed smoothly with no further disruptions.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape showcased their dominance throughout the league stage, finishing at the top of the table with 33 points. They were closely followed by Durban’s Super Giants, who amassed 32 points. The Paarl Royals secured third place with 22 points, while the Joburg Super Kings clinched the final playoff spot with 17 points.
The Capitals (14 points) and MI Cape Town (13 points) failed to make the playoffs, rounding out the bottom of the standings.
Playoffs Intensity
In Qualifier 1, the Sunrisers stormed into the final with a commanding 51-run victory over the Super Giants.
The Eliminator saw the Super Kings outclass the Royals by nine wickets to book their spot in Qualifier 2. However, the Super Giants bounced back emphatically, crushing the Super Kings by 69 runs to earn their place in the final.
One-Sided Finale
The grand finale was yet another dominant performance by the Sunrisers. Batting first, they posted a formidable 204/3, powered by Tristan Stubbs’ scintillating 56 not out off 30 balls. Marco Jansen then took center stage with a brilliant 5/30, dismantling the Super Giants’ batting lineup and securing an 89-run victory for the Sunrisers, who retained their title in style.
Standout Performers
Top Scorers: Ryan Rickelton of MI Cape Town led the charts with 530 runs in 10 matches. Heinrich Klaasen (447 runs) and Matthew Breetzke (416 runs) of the Super Giants followed, while Jos Buttler (408 runs) and Leus du Plooy (377 runs) rounded out the top five.
Top Wicket-Takers: Marco Jansen led the bowling charts with 20 wickets, followed by teammate Ottniel Baartman (18 wickets) and Daniel Worrall (17 wickets). Super Kings’ Lizaad Williams and Keshav Maharaj of the Super Giants claimed 15 wickets each.
