From June 17 to August 9, GoMatadors.com will present the top CSUN Moments from the 2023-24 sports season. In today’s final top moment, CSUN Track & Field’s Trey Knight completed a banner 2024 year where he earned All-American honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons while he participated in the United States Olympic Team Trials.
In what would be a sign of things to come, Knight set a school record in the weight throw in his first-ever CSUN event at the Friday Night Ax ‘Em Open with a mark of 22.17m (72-9) to finish in first place. After another first-place finish at the UW Invite, Knight competed at the 2024 MPSF Championships where he won two individual titles. Knight collected his first championship in the weight throw, breaking his own school record with a mark of 23.52m (77-2) while he also took home the shot put title with a throw of 16.94m (55-7). He would become the first Matador in any sport to win a major MPSF award as he was named MPSF Male Athlete of the Year following the championships.
Knight capped the indoor season with another impressive performance at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston. After coming in with the fifth-best weight throw mark in the nation, Knight broke the school record yet again in the event with a toss of 24.14m (79-2.50). His massive throw earned him second place in the national event as he was just edged by a first-place mark of 24.32m (79-9.50).
During the outdoor season, Knight competed exclusively in the hammer throw and would produce similar results as his indoor season. He won two hammer throw events to begin outdoor season before he took second place at the Mt. SAC Relays, however, that performance would set yet another school record. Knight posted a throw of 76.99m (252-7) at Mt. SAC, breaking the CSUN record as that throw would remain the second-best throw in the nation throughout the outdoor season.
Knight set his sights to the Big West Championships where he took home more accolades. With a throw of 75.10m (246-5), Knight won the hammer throw title by a wide margin as second place was nearly eight meters fewer. Knight would also collect Big West Field Athlete of the Year accolades for his efforts, becoming the first CSUN athlete to win two major awards in two separate conferences in a single year.
Following the conference championships, Knight competed in the hammer throw at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville, Ark. Despite a rain delay, Knight finally took to the field of competition late in the night and produced a throw of 71.02m (233-0) to finish third overall and qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. Knight’s top throw at nationals was his first of the day, a toss of 74.00m (242-9) that placed sixth overall in the event as he took home yet another All-America First Team award.
He returned to Eugene along with sprinters David Phillips, Jr. and Chase Mars later in the month of June to compete at the United States Olympic Team Trials. Knight qualified for the finals of the event, posting a toss of 73.91m (242-6) on day one. Two days later, Knight produced his best throw on his final attempt in the finals, a toss that went for 73.57m (241-4) to take ninth place overall.
