The year 2024 has been an eventful yet bittersweet one for the Indian cricket team. While they ended a major ICC Trophy drought by bringing home the T20 World Cup, they suffered an embarrassing 0-3 defeat in the home Test series against New Zealand, ending their long-standing dominance in Tests at home.
Jay Shah, who is the Chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC), took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight that two cricketing events made it to the top Google Trends 2024.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a marquee T20 event, made it to the list. It was the tournament where the Indian team put an end to their ICC trophy drought by winning the title. This was a significant event and may have made it to the top Google Trends this year also because it marked the end of the T20I careers of big Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja.
It was also the final assignment of former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the team.
India vs England was the other event that made it to the list. Earlier this year, India hosted England for a five-match Test series, which India won 4-1 after losing the first Test.
Can India end the year 2024 with cricketing success?
As the year 2024 is about to come to an end, the Indian cricket team has an opportunity to cap it off on a memorable note. India are playing Australia in the ongoing fourth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Melbourne.
The Test began on Thursday (December 26) and is scheduled to end on Monday, December 30. Australia put up 311 runs on Day 1 and lost six wickets. While the hosts have made a positive start, India will be eager to script a comeback.
Should the visitors manage to win the game in Melbourne, they can end 2024 on a successful note, adding to their achievements throughout the year.
