MASON, Ohio (WKRC) – Some of the best tennis players in the world took center stage in Mason as the Cincinnati Openbegan.
The tournament returned to its original name from 1899, the Cincinnati Open. It comes as the tournament owner, Beemok Capital, announced that it will be staying in the Tri-State for the next 25 years. The company also invested $260 million in the facility to make it the best experience for players and fans.
Fans took full advantage of the beautiful weather, coming from near and far to check out the action on the court. They said it’s always more exciting in person.
“I love it. We have great access to the world’s best players. In Cincinnati you get to see folks that would be really difficult to see other places,” said Cara Knapke.
Fans also had the chance to get autographs and see their favorite players up close as they entered or left the facility. Cheers erupted when a big name came through the player entrance area.
Gaither echoed what a lot of folks said, they like being at the tournament during the early days to check out some of the younger and lower-ranked players.
“There are so many good ones out there right now. I mean, the legends are kind of leaving the game right now. There’s a lot of space for opportunities. They got the top three men, but the women, there’s a lot of space for up-and-comers,” said Gaither.
The Knapke’s brought their daughter, hoping top tennis talent would be a source of inspiration for her on and off the court.
“She started tennis lessons and it’s just a good way for her to see what it potentially could be for her or just what it is for her and others,” said Chad Knapke.
“Especially women, women in sports. It’s good for her to see some role models, some powerful women playing tennis. That’s what we love to see,” said Cara.
The tournament runs through Monday, August 19 and there were still plenty of tickets available.
Though the name has changed, the Cincinnati Open is the longest-running tournament still held in the same city. It was first played in 1899.
